Think about it, here was a man who really knew exactly what to stock. Why? He knew his customers intimately. He knew what brand of tonic Granny Higgins liked to cure her rheumatism. He knew when Bobby Smith and Mary Ann Jones were getting hitched. Knew just what it took to set up a new household.
He knew what folks were likely to need.
More importantly, so did his customers. When something new came in, he told/showed them. I was going to say he was great, but really day in and day out he was efficient.
We’ve been trying to get back to that ever since. So now we need facebook, and twitter and blogs and emails just to get back to that intimacy of the general store’s cracker barrel of days gone by.
